Online CDL training

The theory part of entry-level driver training. In development now.

Under federal rules, people applying for certain commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) and endorsements for the first time must train with a provider listed on a federal registry. DriverOnline is building the theory part of that training as an online course, and it is not available yet.

Who it’s for

  • People applying for a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time
  • Drivers upgrading to a Class A or Class B CDL
  • Drivers adding a passenger, school bus or hazardous materials endorsement for the first time

What the federal rule says

Entry-level driver training is a federal requirement. The rule itself says who has to complete it:

“An individual who applies, for the first time, for a Class A or Class B CDL, or who upgrades to a Class A or B CDL, must complete driver training from a provider listed on the Training Provider Registry (TPR), as set forth in subpart G.”

“An individual seeking to obtain a passenger (P), school bus (S), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement for the first time, must complete the training related to that endorsement from a training provider listed on the TPR, as set forth in subpart G.”

The registry it names is the Training Provider Registry, run by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Anyone can search it.

The rule has exceptions, and they are listed in 49 CFR 380.603. Your state’s licensing agency can tell you whether one applies to you.

Two parts: theory and behind the wheel

Entry-level driver training has a theory part and a behind-the-wheel part. Theory is the knowledge. Behind the wheel is practice in a commercial vehicle.

DriverOnline is an online school, so the part we are building is theory. Behind-the-wheel training is something you arrange with a provider that has the vehicles and the instructors.

Where DriverOnline stands today

DriverOnline is not listed on the Training Provider Registry yet. Our theory course is in development, and we will offer it once we are listed.

Until then we cannot train you for a CDL, and we will not pretend otherwise. If you need training now, search the registry for a listed provider. If you would like to hear from us when our course opens, leave your email and your state.

Before you pay anyone for training

Look the provider up on the Training Provider Registry first. The rule requires training from a listed provider, so that is the check that matters.

Training is one step. Your state issues the license, and it will tell you what else it needs from you.

Questions

CDL Training: common questions

Do I need entry-level driver training?

The federal rule, 49 CFR 380.609, names who has to complete it: people applying for a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, people upgrading to a Class A or Class B CDL, and people seeking a passenger, school bus or hazardous materials endorsement for the first time. The training has to come from a provider listed on the Training Provider Registry. The rule has exceptions, listed in 49 CFR 380.603, so read it or ask your state’s licensing agency to see how it applies to you.

Can I do all of my CDL training online?

No. Entry-level driver training has a theory part and a behind-the-wheel part, and behind-the-wheel training happens in a vehicle. The course we are building covers theory only.

When will DriverOnline’s CDL course open?

We do not have a date to share. Leave your email and your state and we will tell you when it opens.
