After a ticket

Online traffic school

Got a ticket? Take the class on your own time, where your court or DMV allows it.

Traffic school is the class you take after a traffic ticket, or when a court or the DMV orders one. DriverOnline is building it as an online course you take at home, at your own pace, instead of in a classroom.

Who it’s for

  • Drivers who got a traffic ticket and were offered a class
  • Drivers a court has ordered to take a course
  • Drivers the DMV has told to complete a driver improvement course
  • Anyone who would rather take the class at home than in a classroom

What traffic school is

Traffic school is a driving safety class tied to a ticket or an order. A court may offer it, a judge may order it, or your state’s DMV may require it. The class goes back over traffic laws and the habits that keep you out of crashes.

States use different names for it. You may see it called driver improvement, a driving safety course or defensive driving. On this site, traffic school means the course you take because of a ticket, a court or the DMV.

What decides whether it counts for you

Your court or your state’s DMV decides. They decide whether you are eligible to take a class, which courses they accept, whether an online course is allowed, and the date you have to finish by.

They also decide what finishing the class does for your ticket or your driving record. A course provider cannot decide that, and we will not promise it.

So read your ticket and any court paperwork first, and call the court clerk or the DMV if anything is unclear. Do that before you pay for any course.

How an online course works

You sign in on your phone, tablet or computer and work through the lessons in order. Your progress saves automatically, so you can stop whenever you like and pick up later where you left off.

There is no class schedule and nobody to keep up with. When you finish the course, you get a certificate of completion.

Ask your court or DMV how they want to receive your certificate.

Mind your deadline

If your court or DMV gave you a date to finish by, that date is yours to meet. A self-paced course lets you study when you have time, but it does not move the deadline. Do not leave it to the last day.

Questions

Traffic School: common questions

Can I take traffic school online?

Only if your court or DMV allows it. They decide whether an online course is accepted, and which ones. Check your ticket, your court paperwork or the DMV before you sign up.

Will traffic school dismiss my ticket or keep points off my record?

That is decided by your court or your state’s DMV, not by a course provider, and we cannot promise any result. Ask the court clerk or the DMV what finishing a class will do in your case.

Is traffic school the same as defensive driving?

States use the two names differently. On this site, traffic school is the course you take because of a ticket, a court or the DMV, and defensive driving is the course you choose to take.
