Online driver’s ed
Learn the rules of the road before you get behind the wheel.
Driver’s ed teaches new drivers the traffic laws, road signs and safe habits they need before they drive on their own. DriverOnline is building the classroom part as an online course you take at your own pace, on a phone, tablet or computer.

Who it’s for
- Teens getting ready for a learner’s permit or a first license
- Adults learning to drive for the first time
- Parents who want a course their teen can fit around school
- Anyone who wants to learn the rules of the road properly
What driver’s ed is
Driver’s ed is the course new drivers take to learn how to drive safely and legally. It covers traffic laws, road signs and signals, right of way, sharing the road, and what to do when something goes wrong.
It usually comes in two parts. The classroom part is the knowledge: the rules, the signs and the judgment. The behind-the-wheel part is practice in a real car. An online course covers the classroom part only.
How an online course works
You sign in on your phone, tablet or computer and work through the lessons in order. Your progress saves automatically, so you can stop whenever you like and pick up later where you left off.
There is no class schedule and nobody to keep up with. When you finish the course, you get a certificate of completion.
What decides whether it counts for you
Your state does. Every state sets its own rules for driver’s ed: how many hours it takes, how old you have to be, and whether an online course counts at all.
That is why we build each course for one state and list it only when it can be taken there. Before you sign up for any driver’s ed course, ours or anyone else’s, ask your state’s DMV or licensing agency what it requires from a new driver your age.

Questions
Driver’s Ed: common questions
Can I take driver’s ed online?
That depends on your state. Every state decides whether the classroom part of driver’s ed can be taken online, and the answer can change with your age. Ask your state’s DMV or licensing agency before you sign up.
Is DriverOnline’s driver’s ed open in my state?
Not yet. We are building our courses state by state, and we list a course for a state only when it can be taken there. Tell us your state and we will email you when driver’s ed opens.
Tell me when my state opensDoes an online course include driving practice?
No. An online course covers the classroom part: laws, signs and safe driving habits. Behind-the-wheel practice happens in a car, in whatever way your state requires.
How long does driver’s ed take?
Your state sets the number of hours, so it varies. Our courses are self-paced: you choose when you study, and your progress saves each time you stop.
What do I get when I finish?
A certificate of completion. What you do with it next, and what else your state asks of a new driver, depends on your state’s rules.
