Who can take it

Since September 30, 2025, Ohioans aged 18, 19 and 20 must complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice and take an Ohio-approved Class D driver training course to receive a driver license.

Ohio law requires each person under 21 who applies for a driver's license to present evidence of having completed an approved driver training course.

Age

A driving school may not accept a student for driver education before the age of fifteen years and five months without the director's approval.

Course length

The first part of the Class D course is 24 hours of classroom instruction on motor vehicle operation, traffic laws and signs, which may be completed in person or online.

Ohio's rules say driver education for beginning drivers may be delivered in a classroom, by virtual instruction or through an online program.

Certificate

An online school must issue a Certificate of Completion of an Online Driver Education Program within five business days after a student completes every module and passes the final examination.

Ohio issues an online school license for a course of study given over the internet that is the content equivalent of the classroom instruction offered by a Class D school.

Good to know

Students under 18 may not be given more than four hours of online driver education in a calendar day; students aged 18 and over may receive up to eight hours in one day.

A student must answer at least 75 percent of the final examination questions correctly to complete the driver education course.

Abbreviated adult driver training course

Who can take it

An applicant for a first Ohio driver's license who is 21 or older and fails the first attempt at the maneuverability or road test must take an abbreviated adult driver training course before trying the driving test a second time.

One way to complete the abbreviated adult course is a 4-hour state-approved online course followed by 4 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor affiliated with a licensed abbreviated adult driver training school.
