What it does

After completing an approved remedial driving course, a driver may apply to the registrar of motor vehicles for a credit of two points on the driving record.

Who can take it

A driver who has at least two but fewer than twelve points may enroll in a remedial driving course approved by the director of public safety.

What the source says
“Any person against whom at least two but less than twelve points have been charged under section 4510.036 of the Revised Code may enroll in a course of remedial driving instruction that is approved by the director of public safety in accordance with division (L) of this section.”

A driver who completes the remedial course because a judge ordered it does not receive the two-point credit.

Taking it online

Ohio law says the director may approve a remedial course that students take entirely by video teleconferencing or the internet.

“(2) The director may approve a course of remedial instruction that permits students to take the entire course via video teleconferencing or the internet.”

How often

The registrar approves only one two-point credit in any three-year period and no more than five in a driver's lifetime.

“(2) In any three-year period, the registrar shall approve only one two-point credit on a person's driving record under division (C)(1) of this section. The registrar shall approve not more than five two-point credits on a person's driving record under division (C)(1) of this section during that person's lifetime.”

Deadline

A student must finish the full eight hours of the remedial course within thirty days of starting it, or begin the course again.

Who approves it

No one may run a remedial driving course in Ohio without first applying for and obtaining approval from the director of public safety.

“(A) No person shall establish a remedial driving course or allow such course to continue unless the authorizing official first applies for and obtains from the director of public safety approval for a remedial driving course.”

Good to know

An online remedial course must check the student's identity when the student enters and leaves the course and at two random points during it.

Ohio does not approve technology-based instruction for juvenile remedial driving courses.
