Alaska deducts two points from a driver's total when the driver proves completion of a department-approved driver improvement course within 12 months of the last violation.

A provisional license holder who reaches 6 points in 12 months or 9 points in 24 months must complete a driver improvement course approved by the Division.

Age

A driver improvement course taken by a person under 21 must be designed for people under 21 and certified by a national organization.

How often

The Alaska DMV says a defensive driver course may be taken once every 12 months for a point reduction.

The Alaska Court System says a citation cannot be dismissed by completing a defensive driving course, and points drivers to the DMV for a possible point reduction.
